In the course of troubleshooting Windows 95 problems I have received the following advice from Microsoft technicians.
When installing some Microsoft products it is important to take the following steps. Failure to do so can result in operating systems corruption. Internet Explorer 4 and Microsoft Office 97 definitely require this procedure.
Edit your config.sys and autoexec.bat files and comment out any programs that are mentioned here.
Go into the control panel or management program for your virus checker and disable it.
Shut down and turn off the PC and then restart it.
After your desktop comes up, shut down any programs in the system tray that you can.
Press "ctrl-alt-delete" and shut down all programs on the list except EXPLORER and SYSTRAY.
Now you are ready to install your software. Microsoft recommends using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS which is located in the CONTROL PANEL.

When you are done with the installation you must remove the comment marks from the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Then shut down and turn off the PC and restart it.
Microsoft uses the installation of Internet Explorer 4 and Office 97 as an opportunity to upgrade your operating system. The installation procedures replace or modify critical operating system files, such as kernel32.dll.
Certain programs, such as virus detectors, interfere with this upgrade process. The result is operating system corruption.
I know it is almost impossible for most most computer users to comply with these instructions. Nevertheless I have repeatedly been told by Microsoft phone support that my clients' operating system woes resulted from failure to follow this procedure.
I now adhere to this procedure and have had fewer operating system problems as a result.
