Win 9x Help Closer Than You Might Think

    Need a little help with Win 9x? We all do from time to time. Presumed lack of documentation for Windows since version 95 has plagued the user community in a number of venues. Well, maybe Microsoft has been trying to give users a little help since Win 3x, but nobody has listened - or looked closely enough at the Windows directory.

    Users of Win 9x have always had some Microsoft support they've tended to overlook. I'm talking about the Windows TXT files in the main Windows directory/folder. If you are looking for keyboard shortcuts to moving about in Windows, look at the Windows TIPS. TXT fIle.

    I was reminded of this in a recent DOS/ Operating Systems SIG meeting as a user described how to change the file association in REGISTRY for a particular type of graphics file. It was simple and direct: highlight the file and use [Shift] + right-button mouse click to bring up the associations menu in Windows Explorer. Where had I seen this before ? Of course, in the TIPS.TXT file.

    We haven't seen this "author's" name since our undergraduate days reading the Champus Cat column in the campus newspaper at the U of T (That's Toronto, not Texas)--although the surname's the same, we seem to dimly remember his/her first name as Etaoin (an acronym for jumbled type). Probably the Canadian spelling, eh?
