President, Tacoma Open Group For Microcomputers

Osborne-1 Computer
The present club was founded in June 1981 as the "Tacoma Osborne Group" for members who owned an Osborne-1 personal computer. This computer was a revelation for it's day because it was the first personal computer that came complete with an operating system (C/PM), and really useful software like a word processor (WordStar), a spreadsheet (SuperCalc), and two programming languages (MBASIC and CBASIC). It had two floppy disk drives and 64K of random access memory that sufficed for the operating system, one application, and the user data. Users gathered together to share discoveries, trials, and tribulations with this new and exciting device.

Later when members started transitioning to the new IBM designed personal computer, the club changed it's name to "Tacoma Open Group For Microcomputers". Perhaps the term "microcomputers" should have been changed to "personal computers", but the popular term of that day was "microcomputer".

The "Club" consists mainly of the monthly meeting and the newsletter. The meeting is a place where we eagerly share computing experiences and the newsletter is where we read about the experiences of others.

Owning a personal computer is a great hobby and one that continually provides new discovery as well as accomplishing useful things.
